Many Slovaks consider the second-largest Slovak city, Kosice, to be even more beautiful than the capital. The metropolis of East Slovakia can boast the longest pedestrian promenade in the city center, as well as the largest historical conservation area in Slovakia. If you decide to visit Kosice, here are some places that you should not miss!

Historical Centre

The biggest gem of the historical center, St. Elizabeth Cathedral, is the largest church in Slovakia. This beautiful Gothic building was built in the 14th century. Among other things, the monument hides the famous Sigismund's Tower. To reach the Tower you have to climb 160 steps. Right next to the cathedral you will find St. Michael Chapel. The last of the three Gothic gems is St. Urban Tower.

Kosice Calvary

Kosice Calvary is one of the most popular pilgrimage places in Kosice. If you are looking for a quiet spot in the wider city center, make sure to stop here. On the way to the Baroque Church on Calvary from the 18th century, you will find 16 Rococo chapels. It is possible to easily walk on the sidewalk with a stroller and there is also a playground for children. Another spot worth seeing is the Rozalia Cemetery, where many famous Slovaks are buried. It is also the oldest cemetery in Kosice.

Museums and galleries

Apart from the historical monuments, you may find various interesting museums and galleries in Kosice. Some of them can be easily reached on foot from the city center. The East Slovak Museum is one of the oldest and most famous museums in Slovakia. In its courtyard, there is a Greek Catholic wooden church. Other interesting museums to visit are the Aviation Museum situated close to Kosice Airport, or the Slovak Technical Museum. The most famous gallery is the East Slovak Gallery.

Parks

Last but not least, Košice can boast beautiful parks located not only in the city center. The park on Main Square with a singing fountain is one of the most famous. The City Park, the Zoological Garden, and the largest Botanical Garden in Slovakia are also worth visiting. If you plan to have a picnic, Čermel Forest, Alpinka Recreation Area, Barčiansky park, or Anička Park may be an ideal place offering beautiful nooks.
