A trip to the top of the medieval city walls is deinitely a must while visiting Dubrovnik! The trip takes at least an hour, as the ancient walls surround the entire block of the Old Town. For example, in the 15th century, a number of massive towers were added to protect the city from the Turks. Fans of the Game of Thrones series certainly know that Dubrovnik, and especially its city walls, played a very important role in this series. Many scenes from the capital of the Game of Thrones - King's Landing - were filmed here. While walking through the winding streets of Dubrovnik's Old Town, you may feel like you are shooting a famous series or movie. One can easily get lost in the labyrinth of its small streets. An excellent landmark is Placa Street, often called Stradun - the main street in the historic city center, paved with limestone and framed by large old buildings. It is remarkable that all the buildings located here were built according to the same architectural plan.

Lovrijenac Fortress

Lovrijenac Fortress, located on a high cliff overlooking the Adriatic Sea, was built as a separate defensive fortification to repel enemy attacks from the mainland and the sea. The original building dates back to around 1301. The fortress is a triangular building with three stepped terraces, which had to be built due to different cliff heights at the base of the fortress. The fortress was so impregnable that it could be defended by a crew of only 25 people. Lovrijenac Fortress is currently a popular tourist attraction. It often hosts various cultural and sport events - from a world series of cliff diving competitions to local productions of Shakespeare's "Hamlet". In addition, some of the most memorable scenes of the aforementioned popular series Game of Thrones were filmed in this fortress.

The best way to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Dubrovnik's Old Town is to climb to the top of Srd Mountain with the most modern cable car, the only one on the entire Adriatic coast. The landing station is located near the ancient city walls and the climb to the top takes only 3-4 minutes. In addition to the observation deck on the Srd hill, you can find here a cozy restaurant, a snack bar, a souvenir shop, but also a small historical museum and a memorial dedicated to the defense of Croatia during the war in the 1990s. Hiking enthusiasts can get to the top of the mountain on a winding and sometimes quite steep hiking trail.
